U.S. Supreme Court Web Citations

The problem of “link rot” in U.S. Supreme Court web citations is well known.  The UC Berkeley School of Law Library has partnered with application developer Philip Ardery to address this problem by hosting U.S. Supreme Court Web Citations, a web service that captures snapshots of any web resource cited by the United States Supreme Court immediately after their opinions are issued.  The goal of the service is to leverage current web and archiving technologies to minimize the link rot that complicates research as websites change or become unavailable over time.

Preservation in Action Project

The March/April issue of American Libraries features an article by Jeanne Drewes that provides tips and resources for rehousing and reformatting old audiovisual collections, with a sidebar on 21st century preservation basics by Brian Baird. These articles showcase the first-ever PARS Preservation in Action (PiA) project, a program sponsored by the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services (ALCTS) Preservation and Reformatting Section (PARS), in support of the American Library Association’s Libraries Transform initiative. The program is intended to promote an understanding of the importance of preservation while engaging with cultural heritage collections in ALA conference locations.

The PiA project, which took place during the ALA Annual Conference in Orlando in June, engaged librarian volunteers in rehousing a film collection of the Orange County Regional History Center. Participants received training from the Association of Moving Image Archivists and gained hands-on experience in audiovisual preservation. PARS will continue its PiA projects, with a project scheduled for the 2017 ALA Annual Conference in Chicago this June. Preservation Webinar Series: Part 1, Digital Imaging 101

The Government Publishing Office will be hosting a series of webinars on preservation.  The first of these will be held on Monday, March 20 from 2-3pm EDT.  The topic is ‘Digital Imaging 101’.  This webinar will look at developing and managing digital imaging work and how to understand and follow the Guidance for Contributing Digital Content to FDsys/govinfo.  Register online here.
