The March/April issue of American Libraries features an article by Jeanne Drewes that provides tips and resources for rehousing and reformatting old audiovisual collections, with a sidebar on 21st century preservation basics by Brian Baird. These articles showcase the first-ever PARS Preservation in Action (PiA) project, a program sponsored by the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services (ALCTS) Preservation and Reformatting Section (PARS), in support of the American Library Association’s Libraries Transform initiative. The program is intended to promote an understanding of the importance of preservation while engaging with cultural heritage collections in ALA conference locations.
The PiA project, which took place during the ALA Annual Conference in Orlando in June, engaged librarian volunteers in rehousing a film collection of the Orange County Regional History Center. Participants received training from the Association of Moving Image Archivists and gained hands-on experience in audiovisual preservation. PARS will continue its PiA projects, with a project scheduled for the 2017 ALA Annual Conference in Chicago this June. For more information on PiA, including how to get involved in the upcoming project, please visit www.ala.org/alcts/pia2017.
