Most of us have sizable collections of microfiche that we wonder what to do with.  We know that microfiche can degrade over time, but what should we do about it?  GPO is holding a webinar as part of its Preservation Webinar Series entitled Everything You Need to Know About Microfiche.  This webinar will discuss how microfiche is produced, examine risks and risk mitigation for microfiche collections, and options for reformatting microfiche to digital.  The webinar will be held on Tuesday, May 9 from 2:00 to 3:00pm EDT.  You can register here.

In case you missed it, LIPA will sponsor a webinar in celebration of Preservation Week on Thursday, April 27, at 2:00 pm EDT.

LawArXiv is an emerging collaborative initiative of the Legal Information Preservation Alliance, the Mid-America Law Library Consortium, the NELLCO Law Library Consortium, and the Cornell Law Library. The Center for Open Science serves as the technology partner and hosts the LawArXiv repository through the Open Science Framework. The LawArXiv mission is to empower the scholarly legal community and champion open access principles by ensuring community ownership of legal scholarship. The project has been in the planning stages for several months and is expected to launch within the next few weeks.

The webinar will highlight the importance of open access law repositories and the features of the new LawArXiv platform. There will be an opportunity for participants to ask questions. Christine Iaconeta (Law Library Director, University of Maine) will moderate the program. Presenters are Jean Wenger (Chair, LIPA Board), Corie Dugas (Executive Director, MALLCO), Tracy Thompson (Executive Director, MALLCO), and Margaret Ambrose (Access & Research Services Librarian, Cornell Law Library).

There is no charge for the webinar, and it is open to all who are interested. We hope you will join us live, but the webinar also will be be recorded for later viewing.

Universities and other organizations have begun initiatives to support government information accessibility given projected/actual changes in government funding and policy. Although not specifically legal, these initiatives may be of interest to LIPA members and others interested in preservation of government information and data.

The Inter-university for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) launched DataLumos, a crowd-sourced repository for valuable government data resources. DataLumos focuses on data in the social and behavioral sciences.

DataRefuge is a project focusing on collecting federal climate and environmental information and data. DataRescue events are held around the country to expand content in DataRefuge. DataRescue events are collaborative gatherings of researchers, librarians, IT folks, and other interested parties working to develop ideas, tools, protocols and practices to preserve, promote, and protect federally produced data.

Endangered Data Week, April 17-21, is a collaborative, coordinated effort across campuses, libraries, and other institutions, to highlight public datasets that are in danger of being deleted, repressed, or lost.
