The Society of American Archivists has collected information about funding and resources available to libraries and cultural institutions suffering from recent natural disasters. Current SAA President Tanya Zanish-Belcher has compiled this information in a single blog post. Whether you need financial assistance, conservation advice, disaster recovery information, or disaster planning tools, this listing will get you started in the right direction. Please share it broadly with others in your community.

For those who want to help, please consider a donation to the National Disaster Recovery Fund for Archives.

The Council of State Archivists’ (COSA) annual Electronic Records Day is Tuesday, October 10. It is designed to raise awareness about the crucial need to manage and preserve government electronic records. Electronic Records Day is part of CoSA’s State Electronic Records Initiative (SERI).

COSA is sponsoring a webinar, “What about the records?”, which will take place on Tuesday, October 10, 2017 at 3:00 PM EST. Register for the webinar through COSA. Topics will include evaluating information systems before they are purchased and how to deal with existing systems that already hold record content.

COSA also offers useful web resources related to working with and preserving electronic records.

For the month of September, the AALL TS-SIS Preservation Committee highlights Jeff Peachey’s blog. Peachey is an independent conservator and bookbinder, and he frequently posts detailed entries about the technical and artisanal “how” and “why” of various conservation processes. One recent post describes an innovative step-by-step process to replicate early 19th Century book cloth. Perhaps your library can draw inspiration for an in-house repair you’ve been meaning to take action on.

If you have topics you would like to see highlighted, or suggestions for resources, please send them to Celia Gavett at cgavet@law.columbia.edu. Tips from previous months are available here.
