LawArXiv Wins Innovations in Technology Award

LawArXiv has won the 2018 Innovations in Technology Award from the American Association of Law Libraries (AALL).

A jury of law librarian members of AALL selected LawArXiv based on a selection criterion evaluating its benefit to the legal information community and its innovative use of technology to serve as “the human connection between technology, the information, and the user experience,” according to the award website.

“Award jury members praised LawArXiv’s accessible interface and its commitment to providing a free, open-access online platform for publishing and preserving legal scholarship,” said. Jennifer Behrens, Head of Reference Services at the Goodson Law Library (Duke Law School) and chair of the 2018 AALL Innovations in Technology Award jury.

Launched in May 2017 LawArXiv was developed and is supported by a collaboration of the Legal Information Preservation Alliance (LIPA), the Mid American Law Libraries Consortium (MALLCO), NELLCO Library Consortium Inc. and the Cornell Law Library, which is also providing administrative and leadership support.

“We are thrilled to receive this recognition of our work to provide the only noncommercial pre and post-print repository for scholarly legal articles,” said Susan Urban of MALLCO. “LawArxiv will continue in its mission to provide authors and institutions the possibility of archiving their work without being monetized by for-profit vendors.”

July Preservation Tip

Sometimes your fellow librarians are your best resource, as evidenced by the Connecting to Collections Care Online Community.  This group offers free preservation and conservation resources, webinars, and courses. In addition, they have a thriving online discussion forum, where you can ask community members for advice, as well as browse through conservation challenges that colleagues from varied libraries are facing. Want to compare vendors or choose between supply brands? Looking for tips on safely boxing fragile papers, restoring old photographs, even the proper structural support for a 1860’s ball gown lined with boning? Whether your problem is unique or mundane, someone on the forum may have the answer!

LIPA at AALL

Please plan on joining us at the LIPA Business Meeting at AALL, which will be held on Sunday, July 15 from 12:45 to 2:15 pm in Hilton Key Ballroom 12.  In addition to receiving an update on LIPA’s projects, we will be celebrating Margie Maes, who is retiring from LIPA after 10 years as Executive Director.  This will also give you an opportunity to meet and hear from LIPA’s new Executive Director, Michelle Trumbo.  We look forward to seeing you there!
